Atchison, KS is only 30 minutes away and birthplace to Amelia Earhart, the famous woman aviator who vanished on July 2, 1937 during an attempt at the "first around the world" flight around the equator.  The Amelia Earhart Museum is full of history about her life and aviation career. After the museum, there are many other attractions to see in Atchison. Maybe even take a "Haunted" tour" as this historic Kansas town is known to be the "Most Haunted" place in the US. Be sure to take a little walk along the Missouri River on the beautiful riverfront and maybe even stop for lunch or dinner at the River House Restaurant.
